The Schlern with its Santner peak is considered as the symbol of South Tyrol. Especially in the safety of a certified IFMGA mountain guide, the “Wolf of Glanwell” route in the 3° UIAA grade is the easiest and most enjoyable way for beginners to reach this summit.
With an ascent of 700m, the Santner peak is certainly not one of the shortest climbs in the Dolomites. However, the free-standing summit rewards you with its panoramic view over valleys, high plateaus and mountains of South Tyrol. What‘s more, those who love abseiling or want to practice it properly, will be rewarded on this alpine climbing tour with 18 abseilers.
That’s what a alpine climbing day to the Santer peak could look like:
It is early morning. After passing the Schlernboden hut, we still have a 20-minute walk to the starting point of the climbing route „Wolf of Glanwell“.
Initially we climb inconspicuously in easy terrain. Really thick forged rings from earlier times form our belays and protection. Then we reach the north side and the winding channel after climbing around the corner. Subjectively protected, we follow the logical route for a few pitches until we reach the mountain pine field.
Halfway to the summit is done. This is the ideal spot for a break.
The higher we climb, the better the rock and the climbing experience itself. We are now on the north-east ridge of the Santner and the ascent is easy. Suddenly we pass the yawning void and have passed the famous telephone, „the crux“. A few more pitches and the free-standing summit is reached.
While we let our gaze wander, we enjoy a snack! The entire high plateau with Fiè allo Sciliar, Siusi allo Sciliar and Castelrotto with the Alpe di Siusi lies below us. What a view …
Then we choose the descent route of the first climber “Johann Santner”, 18 abseils await us. Don’t worry, as your mountain guide I know the route very well and can help you. Lean back comfortably and I’ll do the rest until we get back to the access path toward the Schlernboden hut.
After the successful crossing of the Santer peak its time for a common drink to let the day pass in review.
