Bad Ratzes is a small, shady side valley of the villages Castelrotto and Siusi allo Sciliar in South Tyrol / northern Italy. During winter, Bad Ratzes offers some great icefalls for advanced ice climbers.
Already the approach from Bad Ratzes along the imposing Weiße Wand is well worth seeing. The frozen waterfall is again a series of several pitches – similar to the Busc da Bleje icefall.
All in all, the Weiße Wand icefalls are not particularly difficult. However, they can be extended with different variations. Several side arms of the main channel enable more difficult intermediate stages and additional ice climbing options. Therefore, longer ice climbing tours can be done. Thanks to its proximity to a hiking trail, the starting point is easy to reach on foot.
In short, the frozen Weiße Wand waterfall provides a varied terrain and medium difficulty for advanced ice climbers. However, with the assistance of an expert guide, this terrain can also be combined with an ice climbing course. The Weiße Wand icefall is ideal to set first ice screws or to improve already existing ice climbing techniques.
